Indica vs Sativa

What the labels actually tell you.

Almost every product on our shelves carries one of three words: indica, sativa or hybrid. They are useful shorthand — but they describe far less than most people assume.

Where the words come from.

Indica and sativa began as botanical terms describing the shape of the plant — how tall it grew, how broad its leaves were, where in the world it came from. They were a way to tell two plants apart on sight.

Over time the industry borrowed those words to describe how a product might feel. That is a much bigger job than the words were built for, and it is why two products labelled the same way can land very differently.

Treat the label as a starting point, not a promise.

The three labels

How the categories are used.

Traditionally

Indica

  • Shorter, broader plant
  • Often described as body-forward
  • Commonly associated with evening use
  • On our site: Calm and Sleep

Traditionally

Sativa

  • Taller, narrower plant
  • Often described as head-forward
  • Commonly associated with daytime use
  • On our site: Energy and Focus

Traditionally

Hybrid

  • A cross between the two
  • The majority of modern cultivars
  • Ranges widely from batch to batch
  • On our site: Chill and Social

Descriptions reflect how these terms are commonly used in the industry. Individual experiences vary.

Almost everything sold today is a hybrid. The label tells you the lineage, not the outcome.

The bigger picture

What actually shapes the experience.

Strain category is one input among several. These tend to matter at least as much.

01

Terpenes

The aromatic compounds that give each strain its smell and flavour. Two sativas with different terpene profiles can be nothing alike.

02

Cannabinoid profile

How much THCA, Delta-9 and other cannabinoids a specific batch actually contains.

03

Format and dose

An ounce of flower, a 25mg gummy and a 1,000mg piece are different experiences before strain enters the picture.

04

You and the setting

Tolerance, body chemistry, what you ate, who you are with and where you are all shape how something lands.

Where to start

If you're looking for...

We organise the catalogue by how people actually shop — the feeling they are after — rather than by botany alone.

Something for the end of the day

Start with Calm or Sleep — mostly indica-labelled flower, gummies and syringes.

Shop Sleep - Something for the end of the day

Something for the morning

Start with Energy or Focus — mostly sativa-labelled carts, pre-rolls and flower.

Shop Energy - Something for the morning

Something for being around people

Start with Social — hybrid-labelled products across most formats.

Shop Social - Something for being around people

Something easygoing and middle-of-the-road

Start with Chill — our largest shelf, and the safest place to begin.

Shop Chill - Something easygoing and middle-of-the-road

Questions

Frequently asked

Is indica always more relaxing than sativa?

Not reliably. The indica and sativa labels describe plant lineage rather than a guaranteed effect, and individual responses vary widely.

What does hybrid actually mean?

A hybrid is a cross between indica and sativa genetics. Most modern cultivars are hybrids to some degree.

Why do you tag products with words like Calm and Energy?

They are navigation labels. They group products by the kind of occasion customers tend to shop for, and they make the catalogue easier to browse than strain names alone.

Can the same strain feel different from batch to batch?

Yes. Cannabinoid and terpene content varies between harvests and batches, which is why batch lab testing matters.
